Is the screen really readable without a backlight in bright sunlight?
It’s one of the best in the industry. The high-contrast monochrome MIP display with Power Glass is specifically designed to reflect sunlight, so at midday it looks almost white-on-black and is perfectly legible even at steep angles—no backlight needed outdoors.
Does it have maps or just breadcrumb navigation?
Only breadcrumb trails and TracBack—no preloaded TopoActive or street maps. You can follow a previously saved course or use TracBack to reverse your route, but you won’t see full-color maps like on the Instinct 3 or Forerunner series. Most Kenyan hikers and runners load courses from Garmin Connect or Wikiloc and find it more than sufficient.
Is there a difference in GPS accuracy between the 40 mm and 45 mm versions?
Yes. The larger 45 mm model has multi-band (dual-frequency) GPS for significantly better accuracy under tree cover and in urban canyons (e.g., Westlands or Ngong Road high-rises). The 40 mm uses single-band only, so distance can drift 20–50 m per 10 km in dense forest or tall buildings—still good, but the 45 mm is noticeably more reliable for trail runners.
Can you swim and shower with it without worry?
