Key Features
1.4-inch AMOLED Display with Sapphire Protection
The Forerunner 970 features a vibrant 1.4-inch always-on AMOLED screen at 454 × 454 resolution, protected by scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. It delivers crisp maps, sharp workout stats, and readable notifications in bright sunlight, while the lightweight 52 g titanium-bezel case maintains all-day comfort.
Elevate Gen 5 Sensor with FDA-Cleared ECG
Garmin’s latest optical heart rate sensor adds on-demand ECG for detecting potential AFib (where supported), nap detection, improved sleep coaching, and highly accurate 24/7 HRV tracking. New running-specific metrics like Running Economy, Step Speed Loss, Running Tolerance, and Impact Load Factor give deeper insight into form and fatigue.
Advanced Training & Recovery Intelligence
Training Readiness, Endurance & Hill Scores, real-time Stamina, Evening Report, and Garmin Triathlon Coach combine sleep, recovery, and workload data to prescribe exactly when to push or rest. Race Predictor and adaptive Garmin Coach plans now factor in running economy for more accurate finish-time forecasts.
Full-Color TopoActive Maps & Multi-Band GPS
Preloaded worldwide TopoActive maps with turn-by-turn navigation, ClimbPro ascent planner, and multi-band GNSS with SatIQ deliver pinpoint accuracy on any trail or city route. Round-trip routing and breadcrumb trails make exploration worry-free, even without a phone.
Built-in Speaker, Mic, and Exceptional Battery Life
Answer calls and use voice commands directly from your wrist with the integrated speaker and microphone. Despite the bright AMOLED screen, it lasts up to 15 days in smartwatch mode or 31 hours in GPS-only—plus 8 GB music storage and a bright LED flashlight for low-light runs.

FAQs
Does the ECG actually work in Kenya and is it FDA-cleared here?
The hardware supports ECG and AFib alerts, but as of December 2025 the feature is only officially activated in countries where Garmin has received local regulatory clearance (USA, EU, Australia, etc.). In Kenya and most of Africa it remains disabled in firmware—even if you sideload a US-profile watch, the ECG app shows “not available in your region.” Garmin East Africa says clearance is “in progress” for 2026.
How much better is the GPS accuracy compared to the Forerunner 965?
In side-by-side tests in Nairobi, Mombasa trails, and Ngong Hills, the 970 with multi-band + SatIQ locks 20–30 % faster under tree cover and tall buildings, and pace/distance is typically within 5–10 metres per kilometre versus 15–25 m on the 965. The difference is most noticeable in forested areas like Karura or during city runs with skyscrapers.
Can you answer calls and speak properly during a run?
Yes—the built-in speaker and mic are loud and clear enough for short calls while jogging. Wind noise is reduced well, and runners report family/friends hear them fine at paces up to 4:30/km. For longer conversations most still prefer a headset, but it works perfectly for quick “I’m 10 min away” calls.
Is the battery life really 31 hours GPS in real Kenyan conditions?
Real-world tests (Nairobi heat 25–32 °C, multi-band GPS, HR always on, 60 % brightness): most users get 28–30 hours continuous GPS—very close to the claim. A full Comrades ultra or back-to-back long runs + music still easily fits in one charge.
